The Biography
Manuel Teixeira Gomes was an aesthete and passionate traveler, born in Portimão in 1860.
Raised in a cosmopolitan cultural environment, he developed a rare sensitivity to aesthetics and became a truly remarkable figure.
After studying at the Seminary of Coimbra, he chose a bohemian literary life in Lisbon and Porto. In 1910, he became involved in the Republican Revolution and was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary in London. Later, he became the 7th President of the Portuguese Republic, resigning due to political disagreements.
In exile, he revisited places he had known before 1910 and wrote extensively, maintaining correspondence with prominent literary figures.
Manuel Teixeira Gomes died in 1941 in Algeria, where he spent his final years.
